The Force Awakens review - spoiler alert

As a follow-up to Return of the Jedi I'd have to give it 3/10 maximum.

What was so bad about the film?
  1. The hype - when the bubble bursts you feel flat
  2. The red herrings - why bother misleading the fans?
  3. It didn't feel like the sequel to Return of the Jedi
  4. The transitions between scenes didn't feel like Star Wars
  5. The editing didn't feel like Star Wars
  6. The trailers felt like Star Wars but the final movie did not
  7. Isn't the movie kind of a re-make of the first Star Wars film?
  8. If Luke has been missing for ages, how long could it really be? It's 32 years since ROTJ. Kylo Ren's treachery caused Skywalker to seek exile. How old is Kylo Ren? He must have been over 20 when he turned on Luke. How long has Luke been gone? 5-10 years max? Not long enough to become a legend/myth surely?
  9. Another Death Star? Come on... this is the third time they've built a Death Star and the fourth film (maybe fifth) film in which it's been mentioned (see episodes 2, 3, 4, 6 & now 7). Not exactly a new plot development?
  10. Kylo Ren was a pretty disappointing villain - not exactly Darth Vader or Darth Maul - just a boy
  11. If Kylo Ren could read minds and was considered inferior to Darth Vader, why did Vader use a mind probe device/floating droid on Leia in the first Star Wars movie? Why not just read her mind?
  12. Is Kylo Ren - Darth Darko? The new emo boy?
  13. How exactly did Rey know the jedi mind trick?
  14. How did Rey know how to make Luke Skywalker's lightsaber jump into her hand - without any jedi training at all?
  15. How did Rey know how to fight with a lightsaber?
  16. How did Rey know how to fly and repair a starship?
  17. Why hire Max Von Sydow and then squander him?
  18. Luke Skywalker doesn't say a single word!
  19. The climactic battle uses the condition of the sun as a timer: when the sun goes out the weapon is fully charged... how come when the weapon was first fired it was broad daylight?
  20. If the Republic is restored and has a fleet, why is General Leia commanding a Rebellion? Rebelling against who?
  21. If Luke beat Vader, how did Kylo beat Luke?
  22. General Hux - not exactly Grand Moff Tarkin was he? Ludicrously young for the part
  23. General Hux made me think of the Bugsy Malone movie; a boy pretending to be a man
  24. A CGI baddie overlord? Why?
  25. R2D2 wakes up and saves the day after being on power down mode?
  26. Abrams had his buddies from Lost and the new Star Trek movies in the film... come on. Seeing Greg Grunberg and Ken Leung was a downer
  27. Han's clever space manoeuvre was the same one twice: 1) activate hyperdrive in the hanger & 2) jump inside an atmosphere... hyperdrive jumps that are considered impossible/crazy
  28. Han's hyperdrive manoeuvre #2 - never been done before? Try Babylon 5. Abrams pinched the idea just as he pinched his TV series idea Almost Human from Total Recall 2070 and Fringe from The X-Files
As a Star Wars movie unfortunately, Abrams did to Star Wars just what he did to Star Trek - made an action film featuring known characters.
Abrams borrowed from Spielberg for Super 8.
He again recycled a known formula for Mission Impossible.
This is all he does. There's no originality at all.
He's a one-trick pony...
