Fledgling

If Kylo Ren represents a fledgling villain, "not yet at the peak of his powers" and by his own admission inferior to Darth Vader, how exactly was he able to take out Luke Skywalker and drive him into exile?

Luke beat Vader after all.

An embarrassing villain?

When Ren destroys the interrogation chamber his own stormtroopers retreat in embarrassment; wishing they'd served under Vader or even Jar Jar.

Emo tantrum

After Ren smashed up the console with his lightsaber I was just dying for the officer to point out that he needed to use that workstation in order to continue his search.

Sunk cost investment

The danger with The Force Awakens is 'sunk cost' investment. After months of hype and excitement, figure hunting and pining for the movie it is very hard to come to terms with the disappointment of the final product. I came out the theatre desperately trying to convince myself that the movie was OK. It just had to be, didn't it? I thought of Chewbacca's character development and sought to remember other good bits.

Contrast this with watching Guardians of the Galaxy or The Winter Soldier. No need for any effort there. Wow. They blew my socks off. And so many times. Again and again and again.

Kylo Ren pre-order...

I was one of those optimists who pre-ordered S H Figuarts Kylo Ren in September after seeing the shabby Hasbro offering.

It took some wrangling to cancel the pre-order and get my money back.

Kylo Ren poster

Last week I gave my Kylo Ren poster to a 15 year pubescent boy who has a real taste for emo. He loves me now but I feel a little ashamed for encouraging him.

When you just don't respect the villain you work for...

When Ren destroys the interrogation chamber his own stormtroopers retreat in embarrassment; wishing they'd served under Vader or even Jar Jar.

Emo Kylo Ren Twitter feed

I like the Emo Kylo Ren Twitter feed. It neatly illustrates just how weak the new villain is relative to Vader and Maul. I think he's based on Charlie from Lost? Expect a Driveshaft cover song in the next movie...
