Superman re-visited...

In 2013 we watched Man of Steel and really didn't like it. Since then we've re-watched the first 2 Christopher Reeve movies and Lois & Clark (season 1). Also, the 1989-1995 (?) Batman movies and the Nolan ones.

Recently, we saw Batman Versus Superman for the first time.

Superman the Movie was pretty decent despite being dated. Superman 2 was very tedious and boring. Lois & Clark (season 1) remained great fun and boasted easily the best Lex Luthor I've ever encountered.

The initial Batman versus Superman trailer looked good but the CGI monster trailer didn't so we gave it a miss. This years Wonder Woman trailers made us reconsider watching Batman versus Superman and we had very low expectations. Surprisingly it was pretty good. Not perfect but certainly good.

So, we ordered a cheap second hand Man of Steel DVD and gave it a second try... Hey, after Batman versus Superman it really made sense and worked. This darker Superman works well in our modern society. It isn't the 1950's anymore or even Reeve's 1970's.

People speak about the old Superman movies from memory. They seldom re-watch them with modern eyes. Superman 2 onwards were bad movies; each one worse than the previous one. Superman Returns was overhyped and poor. Smallville was not really worth mentioning.

So, Zack Snyder's vision gets a thumbs up from me!

Too fast, too tedious...

After seeing the trailer for the new Batman film, new Star Trek film and having watched the new Star Wars film I must confess that our tastes aren't really in step with the modern audience.

We could happily watch To Catch a Thief, Harvey, El Cid, a John Hughes film, The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Star Trek: the original series (seasons 1 & 2), Guardians of the Galaxy, Elizabethtown, Austenland, Kingsman, Maleficent, Amelie, Solaris (almost anything featuring Clooney)... and hundreds more.

The Too Fast, Too Furious style of film numbs us out. Too many stunts, special effects and lousy dialogue. We love a film like The Illusionist... where you have to pay attention and nothing grisly happens. We also love musicals... Into the Woods was great!

Black Narcissus

At the end of the movie Black Narcissus (1947) it said that the film was made entirely in a studio. Given the staggering Himalayan vistas and mood of the film, this was a remarkable achievement. Incredible skill and technology.

St Trinians?

I have just watched the Alastair Sim comedy The Happiest Days of Your Life and have yet to see his St Trinians movies. I'm not sure what to expect. Given Sim's excellent film career, St Trinians seems an odd venture...

A brief Google image search yields soft core teen porn images that seem somewhat poor taste. The actresses may not be teenagers themselves but the aim is clearly to portray teen girls in a sexually provocative manner. Why bother? For whose entertainment?

The Bible mini series

The Bible mini series was very watchable and highly recommended.

Less violence, more old testament stories (dozens more?), angels not dressed in robes and armour would have all suited me nicely.

Hippy Jesus was a pleasant break after the emotional blackmail of JesusHeart (The Passion) in which Mel Gibson's hammered his suffering message relentlessly. Well, yes, Mel, he sure suffered, but there was more to the story than that...

CGI

Noah wasn't helped by the fact that the movie featured trailers for yet another Transformers movie and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We were already primed for more CGI treebeard wannabees. Bad choice by the film distributors.

Noah & the Rock Monsters

We saw the new Noah movie tonight, starring Russell Crowe. My Hubby called it "Noah & the Rock Monsters".

Rather than follow a spiritual approach, the film went down a different route, falling somewhere between Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, graphic novel adaptations and 1970's wildlife footage.

I'd sooner watch the recent Bible mini-series.
