Rather than focus on the real-life accomplishments of women, The Queen's Gambit is revisionist fiction that re-paints history in a way that appears to favour women. In the series it pretends to be factual - with music, political events and dates being specifically mentioned - yet it is false through and through.

A woman did not win the World Chess Championship title in 1968. A man did.

By pretending it was a woman, the series devalues the accomplishment of the champion and patronises women by suggesting that we can only succeed in fiction.

The Queen's Gambit actress also talks too fast and even says, "It's complicated" - which is not the lexis of the 1960's.

Feminism in the 1960's

In the early 1960's the pill was available for women and it signified the ultimate feminist expression. To celebrate, women wore mini-skirts and tights, so as to flaunt their legs and parade their sexuality.
Tights became a symbol of female empowerment and independence. Yet, in The Queen's Gambit, the feminist heroine doesn't even wear hosiery until the final episode. I found this incongruent with the era.

In Rebecca, the movie is set in the French Riviera, yet none of the women wear stockings.

If you watch To Catch a Thief - filmed on location in the French Riviera 1954/5, every single woman wears hosiery.

Roman Holiday (made 1 year earlier) has a lengthy moment where the young Audrey Hepburn takes off her shoes and flexes her stocking feet.

In Marnie (1964) there's a scene where Tippi Hedren's stocking feet are almost fetishised by Hitchcock, as the camera watches her feet for a full 2 minutes as she creeps across the office seeking to avoid the cleaner.

Netflix - Rebecca & The Queen's Gambit...

Have you seen the Rebecca re-make on Netflix? Or The Queen's Gambit? I thought that both were good. Period dramas.

My main complaint in both cases was bare legs.

If you wanted an old watch, is there an alternative to buying an authentic old watch?

Yes. You can buy a 'faux vintage' watch instead. It will look like an antique but contain every technological advantage of modern production standards.

Many companies produce fake old watches nowadays and some are very cool indeed.
