Independence Day Resurgence
We finally got around to watching Independence Day Resurgence... there was a lot of lazer beams, explosions, speeches and explosions.
But we did find out the reason why the aliens attack other planets. They want to harvest the molten core. In the 2nd film they send a 3000 mile ship to do just that. And nearly succeed. I get it.
OK, so why didn't they just do that in the first movie?
I mean, they blew up all the major planetary monuments, killed loads of people and created some interesting special effects. But why? If they're only after the core and we can't even penetrate their shields, why bother messing around? Why not just go right for the core?
Now, I get it. When they made the 2nd movie someone forgot to watch the original. To ensure continuity and all that...

Star Trek before Kirk?
What is this obsession with making Star Trek series prior to Shatner's Kirk?
The (really lousy) new movies look more hi-tech than the 1960's show and so does the new TV show. All supposedly set years before the Original series?
New Klingons?
Star Trek Discovery have re-designed the look of the Klingons. Why bother?
In the Original series they were dark-skinned humans. Then in Star Trek the Motion picture they were re-designed. And now again? Huh?
New Star Trek and Star Wars
Although I quite like Star Trek and Star Wars I'm not at all impressed with the new Star Trek TV show trailer and The Force Awakens and Rogue One both left me dissatisfied.
My main gripe with The Force Awakens was a very simple question my husband asked (which undermined the whole film):
"If Princess Leia overthrew the Empire and established a new Republic why is she leading a Rebellion and who is she Rebelling against?"
Yes. He has a point.

Rogue One
We finally got around to watching Rogue One... Well, it was OK. Not half as bad as Force Awakens and there were some pretty cool characters. Just a pity that they all died. And Disney want a sequel...
It's a bit like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. They kill off the main characters and then want a sequel. Foresight anyone? Anyone?
The first Star Wars trilogy was badly acted but still had 'classic' moments of magic and wonderment. These new films have tedious monologuing and some truly forgettable lead characters. Yawn.
Last Jedi is up next and I think we'll give Mark Hamill a wide berth. Then it's Han Solo... Woody Harrelson may make it worth the watch.
